Our Programs

Currently, the Vancouver Black Therapy and Advocacy Foundation offers three programs:

Free Counselling ProgramOur free counselling program offers access to our all Black team of culturally competent therapists free of charge for our funding recipients. Each recipient is provided with 10 free counselling sessions with a VBT&AF partner therapist. Funding recipients are allowed to choose their therapists when they are a part of this program as well. We aim to prioritize those who identify as low-income, 2SLGBTQIA+, those who are new to therapy, and individuals with disabilities. Sessions for the program can be conducted virtually or in person.

Applications for this specific program are available once a year and are available for a one month period. If needed, VBT&AF also can provide additional assistance with completing the application through our patient navigation services. Subscribe to our newsletter and follow us on Instagram to stay updated on our intakes.

Intake Schedule

VBT&AF accepts new participants for our free therapy on a once-per-year basis. Our 6th free round was announced in January 2025, providing funding for 20 individuals to receive 10 therapy sessions each. At this time, applications are now closed.

Past Intake RoundsRound 5: December 2023 (18 participants, 15 sessions each)
Round 4: May 2023 (30 individuals, 5 families, 15 sessions each)
Round 3: May 2022 (30 individuals, 5 families, 15 sessions each)
Round 2: April 2021 (40 individuals, 10 sessions each)
Round 1: June 2020 (25 individuals, 20 sessions each)

Low Cost Counselling
Our low cost program was launched in 2023 as an additional initiative to dismantle the barriers to accessing mental health care. This program accepts participants on an ongoing basis, with spots being allocated based on order of application. The “pay what  you can” sliding scale model ranges from $75-$130 for each session based on one’s financial bandwidth. Applicants are eligible to apply to both the free and low-cost programs if they so choose. Please note that with our low cost initiative, applicants are paired with an accredited therapist from the VBT&AF network.
